03Community

A room where the awkward questions get asked out loud.

Free to join, moderated lightly and firmly. Most of what we publish started as somebody admitting on the board that they did not know how to credit something.

01Community guidelines

Seven things we hold each other to.

Written by members, revised twice, and enforced by people rather than by a filter. Breaking one gets you a conversation. Breaking the last one gets you removed.

  • Name your sources. A region and a century is a category, not a credit. Say which object, held where, made by whom.

  • Ask before you generalise. A motif shared with you for one project is not a motif released for every project.

  • Pay people for expertise. If someone spends an afternoon teaching you a process, that afternoon has a rate.

  • Bring the disagreement, not the subtweet. Say the difficult thing here, to the person, with the specifics attached.

  • Post work in progress. Finished work invites applause; unfinished work invites the help you actually wanted.

  • Record refusals. When a community declines, say so publicly and leave the reason in their words.

  • No recruitment, no scraping, no lifting posts into a dataset. Members share here on the understanding that it stays here.

We are crediting a tile workshop whose proportions we adapted, and the workshop would rather be credited collectively than by the two cutters who actually did the work. The cutters disagree. Has anyone landed somewhere sensible on this? I would rather not pick a side by publishing.

For anyone printing from cast blocks: we switched to a softer packing under the sheet and the counters stopped filling in on long runs. Photographs of both settings are in the shared folder. The change costs nothing and I wish someone had told me two years ago.

I ran the six-week teaching pack with second years and the declaration week was the one that worked. Three students changed their whole project after writing it down. One asked whether the unit could start with the declaration instead. I think they are right.
