Pattern as Protocol

A weaver holds a pattern as a sequence of decisions, not as a picture. Andean textile structure carries information in its ply, its direction and its counts, which is why the khipu and the cloth belong to the same argument about what a record can be.

Five artists and one research group were asked to build generative systems from documented structures, with the source communities named, consulted and paid. What they produced runs in the browser, alongside the structural notation it came from.

Every piece ships with its rule set in plain language, so a visitor can see the instruction before they see the output. The refusals are published too: three structures the weavers asked not to have generalised, and the reasons given.
